Dr. Wei Lu from University of West Australia visited RCDD from July 19 to 21, 2012. Dr. Lu has being working with Ling Wang and Xiu Le in initiating a drug screening protocol against H. Plylori.

From June 18th to 29th, Jiabo Li, a leading scientist of Accelrys, came to visit RCDD. During these two weeks, Li gave several lectures to graduate students and talked about the work progress. Zhihong Liu, a first-year graduate student, said that Li gave an excellent lecture on genetic algorithm(GA), and now he could optimize the parameter with the help of GA. Li is very popular with the students. Because student always learn a lot from Li, especially the way to solve problems.

On June 19, Prof. Jun Xu visited Prof. Tietao Deng, the Grand Master of TCM in China, on the campus of Guangzhou TCM University. Prof. Deng warmly welcomed Prof. Xu, and talked with Prof. Xu for more than one hour. Prof. Xu told Prof. Deng that we should humbly study TCM theories; the discovery of new medical solutions should be based upon deep understanding the classic work and TCM clinic experience. “We should promote TCM by combining west and east medicine”, Prof. Xu emphasized.

According to UWA (University of West Australia) News, DIISR AUSTRALIA CHINA SCIENCE AND RESEARCH FUND has been approved for Professor Barry Marshall, Professor Jun Xu, Dr Wei Lu, and Alfred Tay, School of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of UWA, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Sun Yat-sen University: ‘Strengthening collaboration with Sun Yat-Sen University on novel chemical drug development against H.pylori infection’— $29,500 (2012). (UWA News, 28 May 2012: Volume 31, #7, p 15)

Starting on June 3, 2012, per the invitation of Prof. Berry Marshall, Nobel laureate, Prof. Jun Xu visited University of West Australia (UWA) in Perth.

On June 4th, Prof. Xu Visited UWA and Marsahll Center.

On June 5th, Prof. Xu delivered a speech entitled “Drug discovery @ the intersection of East and West” in School of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (Marshall Centre for Infectious disease) of UWA.

On May 8, 2012, Prof. Jun Xu met Prof. J. Andrew McCammon, a Member of the US National Academy of Sciences, on University of California San Diego. Two professors exchanged ideas on computational chemistry and applications in pharmaceutical researches, and decided to initiate collaborations between two groups.

On Tuesday May 15, 2012, per the invitation of Prof. Michael K. Gilson, Director of UCSD Drug Discovery Institute (DDI), Skaggs School of Pharm. and Pharm. Sci., Prof. Jun Xu visited University of California San Diego. Prof. delivered a talk on “Drug discovery @ the intersection of East and West” at DDI at 4-6pm.

May 30-June 1, 2012, Prof. Jun Xu attended 2012 Innovative TCM and Botanic Drug International Summit in Haining. As a invited speaker, Prof. Xu delivered a talk entitled “East Meeting West: Integrating TCM and West Medicine”. Prof. Xu was chairing the session one: Fundamental research of innovative TCM and botanic drugs and applications.

Dr. Calvin Yu-Chian Chen is a Research Fellow and advisor in China Medical University and its affiliated Beigang Hospital. He also a research fellow in Harvard medical school and adjunct professor of the Department of Bioinformatics in Asia University. Dr. Chen built the world’s largest TCM database (TCM database@Taiwan) and the world’s first cloud-computing CADD system (iScreen.cmu.edu.tw). Dr. Chen’s laboratory focuses on interdisciplinary issues, such as bioinformatics, systems biology, chemoinformatics, and pharmainformatics, and investigates biological problems by means of mathematic, physical, chemical, and computational methods. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2001 and postdoctoral training at Sinica and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, program of Computational and Systems Biology).

Title: Traditional Chinese Medicine Informatics

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) drugs comprise multiple compounds regulating multiple targets for a given class of medical indications, and are tunable to the symptoms of the individual. This seminar presents case studies on deducing novel TCM anti-influenza and anti-hyperlipedemia prescriptions from structure biology. The studies suggest that, by further investigating TCM theory and mining TCM databases, a better drug discovery paradigm may arise – one that can be beneficial to both TCM and modern medicine.
